On Friday in social science students began to work on writing their essay responses to the question: Was Asoka an enlightened ruler or a ruthless conqueror? Students have been preparing to use evidence from a variety of primary and secondary sources to support their claim for either side. 4th, 7th, and 9th hour classes wrote their essays in class today while 6th and 8th hour classes will be writing their essays on Monday. We will be wrapping up Indian empires next week and begin to review for our exam on ancient India. Announcements / Upcoming Events

On Thursday in social science we wrapped our our source analysis on Asoka. After examining evidence from six primary and secondary sources, students prepared to write their essays on Asoka by completing outlines in class.

Today in social science students continued their analysis of Asoka's reign. Students read about the context of his rule and began to analyze primary and secondary sources related to Asoka. We will continue examining sources on Asoka for the rest of the week to work up to writing our responses to the question: Was Asoka an enlightened ruler or a ruthless conqueror? Happy Monday! Today in social science students were introduced to Asoka. We read about Asoka's reign as a class and discussed the concept of "the ends justifying the means." This week students will be analyzing a variety of primary and secondary sources to determine whether or not Asoka was an enlightened ruler or a ruthless conqueror. They will be asked the question: did the ends justify the means? Essays (a major grade) will be written in class on Friday and will be due on Monday. Announcements / Upcoming Events
On Friday in social science students wrapped up their examination of Buddhism by continuing their notes on the religion and its role in Indian history. In addition, students completed their chicken mummies today by executing the final step: wrapping the mummies in linen and placing them in a sarcophagus. Next week we will be focusing on Indian empires and the influence of emperors such as Asoka. Announcements / Upcoming Events
Today in social science students had the opportunity to examine Indian artifacts brought to us by our guest speaker from Spurlock Museum. Students learned about various Indian artifacts (clothes, spices, religious figurines), discussed the role of religion in India, wrote group stories about selling spices at a market, and listened to ancient Hindu myths told by Mrs. Kim Sheahan. On Wednesday in social science students wrapped up their analysis of the story of Buddha's enlightenment. Following this, students took notes on Buddhism in ancient India. Today in social science we began to study another religion in ancient India: Buddhism. Students read the story of Buddha's enlightenment and answered corresponding analysis questions. Today in social science, students wrapped up their study of Hinduism. Our class finished up our notes on the origins of Hinduism, watched a clip about Hinduism in India today and practiced our vocabulary related to this religion by working on a vocabulary building exercise.
