Today in social science students demonstrated what they have learned over the last month by taking the ancient India assessment. In honor of Black History Month and NAAPID (National African-American Parent Involvement Day), we spent the day in social science focusing on the civil rights movement. Students read and analyzed poetry by individuals such as Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and W.E.B. Du Bois. As a class, we discussed how this poetry can give us insight into the fight for civil rights in the United States. Tomorrow we will spent the day reviewing ancient India in preparation for our unit assessment this Thursday. Announcements / Upcoming Events
On Thursday in social science we learned about the impact of various Indian empires. Students examined empires such as the Mauryan and Gupta empires as well as the achievements they made. Today we welcomed our guest speaker Mrs. Dey! Mrs. Dey visited our classes to discuss Indian culture, show Indian clothing, and demonstrate Mehndi artwork to students (application of henna to the skin). It was a very exciting day in social science! Tomorrow we will wrap up our study of ancient India by discussing the impact of various Indian empires on the region. Announcements / Upcoming Events
Today in social science class we focused on our Second Step curriculum and discussed how to problem solve when conflicts arise. Students discussed the first four problem solving steps (Analyze, Brainstorm, Consider Options, Decide) and applied the steps to various situations. Tomorrow we will bring our focus back to Ancient India and we will begin to discuss Indian empires. Announcements / Upcoming Events
Today in social science students completed writing their essay responses to the question: Was Asoka an enlightened ruler or a ruthless conqueror? Students have been preparing to use evidence from a variety of primary and secondary sources to support their claim for either side. 6th and 8th hour classes wrote their essays today. We will be wrapping up Indian empires this week and we will begin to review for our exam on ancient India next week. Announcements / Upcoming Events
