Today in class we took time to discuss an important current event - the grand jury ruling in Ferguson on Michael Brown's death. After watching news clips and reading an update on the ruling, students discussed their thoughts on the issue. We spent the rest of class beginning to learn about Egyptian structures such as obelisks. We will continue to discuss Egyptian achievements including obelisks, pyramids, and much more next week. On Monday in social science we learned about daily life in ancient Egypt. After watching a video about what it was like to live in the Nile Valley, students had the opportunity to write their own journal entries from the point of view of an ancient Egyptian. On Thursday in social science we continued to discuss the role of geography in Egyptian history. Students completed their labeled maps of the Middle East and began taking notes on Egyptian geography. Today students were introduced to ancient Egyptian civilization in class. We began to look at Egypt's geography by discussing the Nile River, examining primary sources related to the rivers importance, and generating labeled maps of the region that Egypt is located in. Today in class students wrote their essays on Hammurabi's Code. Students had to explain whether or not they think Hammurabi's code is just and had to support their claims with evidence from the primary sources covered in class. Essays can be taken home if they are not completed in class and will be due on Monday. Tomorrow we will begin reviewing for our exam on Unit 3: Mesopotamia next week. Announcements / Upcoming Events
On Wednesday in social science we began to plan for our written responses on Hammurabi's Code that we will be completing in class tomorrow. Students had the opportunity to review the rubric that will be used to grade their responses and to plan their claims and evidence for their essays. The prompt of the essay is: Is Hammurabi's Code just? We will write our essays tomorrow in class. Students will be allowed to take essays home to complete if they are not finished in class.
