Welcome to My Digital Portfolio
Hello! I'm Mrs. Cook and I currently live in Urbana, Illinois. I was born in Russia, but after living briefly in France and the Netherlands, I moved and settled here in the United States. I have spent most of my life right here in Champaign-Urbana, so I consider myself a "townie." I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BA in History and Secondary Education. After graduating I served as Assistant Director of the Russian Heritage School and simultaneously worked as an aide for Champaign Unit 4 Schools. For the last 10 years, I have had the privilege to serve as a 6th grade social studies teacher at Jefferson Middle School in Champaign. I am also endorsed to teach English and Russian at the middle school level. In 2017, I earned my MA in Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership.
My students are my livelihood. By creating a classroom environment that fosters positive educational interactions, collaboration, critical thinking, civic engagement, and creativity, I hope to reach each and every one of my students. As a teacher, I strive to help students reach high levels of engagement in their learning and develop the ability to think critically about the ever-changing global society in which they live.
In the classroom, my primary focus is on cultivating collaboration and critical thinking skills, providing differentiated instruction, and creating an environment characterized by student-guided learning. In addition, I view the use of technology in the classroom as essential as we are entering an age of higher technological dependency. My interests outside of teaching include photography, music, travel, and spending time with family.
