Reflection on "I Have a Dream" Lesson Plan
This lesson plan is meant to demonstrate Standard Six of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards: Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication. The lesson covers Martin Luther King's “I Have a Dream” speech, and was chosen as an artifact for this standard because it addresses student issues with reading comprehension, making it a prime example of meeting this standard. A shared reading is used for the instructional strategy, which allows all students to access and comprehend the text. In addition, important vocabulary words for the speech are covered in order to ensure students have a sound foundation on which to build their learning.
Creating picket signs and presenting them after listening to and discussing the speech also allows students to practice writing and oral communication after their reading communication is worked on. In effect, the lesson is an appropriate representation of this standard because it is specifically geared to allow each and every student to acquire literacy skills like reading, writing, and oral communication. Planning and collaborating to put this lesson together has helped me grow immensely as a teacher. I was able to put to use newly learned instructional strategies and teaching methods in order to promote literacy in the classroom. As a whole, creating this lesson taught me the importance of incorporating reading, writing, and oral communication into a lesson plan, and doing this in an effective manner.

Artifact Two
World War I Introductory Lesson
Performance Indicator 6O: The competent teacher teaches students to analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and summarize information in single texts and across multiple texts, including electronic resources;
While completing my student teaching at a middle school in a small urban community, I created an introductory lesson plan on World War I that requires students to use reading, writing, oral communication, and research skills. In addition, the tasks within the lesson allow students to utilize creativity as well as technology to complete objectives.

Reflection on WWI Introductory Lesson
This lesson plan on WWI showcases my ability to meet Standard Six of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards: Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication. Not only does it engage student reading skills by requiring them to read, analyze, and evaluate primary and secondary sources both online (electronic) and from a textbook, but it also taps in writing and oral communication skills through written assignments and verbal presentations. I chose this lesson plan to reflect this standard because it is an interactive and engaging lesson that uses various student-centered methods to address reading, writing, and communication skills. This lesson helps students learn how to analyze, evaluate, and apply information from various written sources, including electronic resources.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of this standard because it encourages students to use reading, writing, and communication skills throughout the entirety of the lesson. By using their textbooks and iPads to research information for their WWI role, students learn how to apply information they have gathered from multiple textual sources. Their short written assignments require them to practice writing skills, while also including a creative component that helps students stay motivated. Finally, the presentation of their findings at the close of the lesson helps student learn how to use their oral communication skills. Overall, the creation of this lesson demonstrates my growth as a teacher and my ability to use a variety of instructional, technological, and motivational tools within my lesson plans.
