Standard Three | Planning for Differentiated Instruction
The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Artifact One:
Revised Triangular Trade Lesson Plan
Knowledge Indicator 3D: The competent teacher understands when and how to adjust plans based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and responses;
During my CI 335: Educational Technology course, I learned about a variety of technological tools that could make my practice more effective and allow me to better differentiate instruction for a diverse group of students. Below is a lesson plan (with a worksheet attached) that I have written and edited to incorporate technological tools for students to use. By adapting my teaching methods and incorporating technology into the lesson, I provide students with instruction that is more effective, engaging, and differentiated.

Reflection on Revised Triangular Trade Lesson Plan
This revised lesson plan on the Triangular Trade shows my ability to meet Standard Three of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards: Planning for Differentiated Instruction. I chose to use this lesson plan as my artifact because it offers a variety of instructional techniques for students. By incorporating the use of Google Earth and Smart Boards, I was able to provide students with new learning methods. Not only will auditory learners be reached through the activities in this lesson, but the Google Earth exercise will also give visual and kinesthetic learners a chance to have a meaningful and memorable learning experience as well. These multiple forms of engagement, representation, and expression ensure the learning of all students in my classroom.
In this way, the revision of this lesson plan resulted in the application of differentiated instruction for students and is an appropriate reflection of my ability to meet this standard. In addition, revising a previously written lesson plan of mine has helped me grow as a teacher and has given me experience in using reflective practice to improve my teaching efficiency. I was able to recognize that the original lesson plan was geared primarily towards auditory learners and somewhat towards visual learners as well. Using Google Earth on a Smart Board not only creates a more meaningful learning experience for the visual learners, but it also taps into the learning methods of kinesthetic learners as well. This is due to the fact that both Google Earth and Smart Boards allow students to interact with them. They can visualize information and learn map skills through this technology. As a result, a variety of different types of learners can be reached through this revised lesson, and the lesson becomes more able to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Artifact Two
Accommodations for Lesson Plan on Boston Massacre
Performance Indicator 3M: The competent teacher develops plans based on student responses and provides for different pathways based on student needs;
During my time in SPED 405: General Educator's Role in Special Education, I was exposed to a variety of ways to make accommodations for students with special needs. In the course, I also created my own set of accommodations to be used in a lesson plan on a Boston Massacre, geared to help a student with low reading comprehension abilities. This table of the accommodations I have created for the lesson demonstrates my ability to differentiate instruction based on specific student needs.

Reflection on Accommodations for Lesson Plan on the Boston Massacre
This table of accommodations for a lesson plan on the Boston Massacre demonstrates my ability to meet Standard Three of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards: Planning for Differentiated Instruction in order to fit the needs of all students. In this specific case, I provided accommodations for a student, Marcus*, based on his PLAAFP report in his IEP. Using this information, I created a set of accommodations for the student input, teacher output, assessments, and behavioral expectations within the lesson. I chose to use this artifact because I differentiated my planning in order to better fit Marcus's needs and abilities, demonstrating my ability to do this for all students.
This is an appropriate representation of my ability to differentiate my instruction because it shows that I can use appropriate classroom accommodations to ensure all students meet learning goals. With Marcus in particular, his low reading comprehension abilities as well as his difficulties in finding perspective and intent in written texts require information to be presented differently than it might be presented to other students with higher reading abilities. His struggle with writing tasks also requires differentiation in regards to this lesson plan. The set of accommodations I have brainstormed illustrate how I have grown as a teacher, how I have acquired more educational tools to use in the classroom, and how I have learned to recognize appropriate accommodations to use in the classroom as well as the most beneficial times to use them.
